i use this when i go on long plane trips. i am definitely knocked out but have a big hangover and it takes me a long while to "get with it" after it wears off. it is worth it to me because i am terrified of flying.

Pros:

it does indeed relax me to the point of being comatose

Cons:

the aftereffects leave something to be desired, but this is legal and is not a drug per se

Valerian has worked really well for my insomnia. It's relaxing and helpful without being overly sedating. I don't feel groggy the next day, just better rested. The smell takes a bit getting used to, but other than that it's a great product.

Cons:

odor of valerian can be a bit strong

Great sleep aid if out of Melatonin.

I have insomnia and have battled it for years due to my depression and anxiety issues. My doctor originally told me to take over the counter medications like Unisom, but I wanted to go a more natural route after a year of taking medication. I got a book from the library on natural approaches to dealing with anxiety, and it suggested Valerian Root and Melatonin. I tried the Valerian Root first. It works well, but you must take a lot more of it than the Melatonin. The Valerian also smells horrible and is hard to swallow because of this. If you are out of Melatonin, its good. Otherwise, I would not recommend it really.
